Two projects have been implemented in China as well as a number that have been assessed and modified.
Sheep development
This project was located in Xinjiang Province, centred on the peak breeding farm, Nanshan. A co-operative breeding program was instituted that used Nanshan as the nucleus and other studs as contributors.
Artificial insemination and embryo harvesting were both incorporated into the program to maximize genetic change. Software was written to enable objective selection decisions to be easily facilitated.
Distribution networks were also developed.
Intensive dairy farms
A proposal was designed to large scale intensive dairy farms in the north-east of China. Each of ten farms would comprise 4,500 cows fed forage supplied by local small-holders on a contract basis, other feedstuffs to be purchased on the local and international markets.
Each farm would be state of the art, incorporating the latest technology and management techniques.
Included in the proposal is a comprehensive financial analysis and quality assurance program.
