South Africa

South Africa has a livestock recording system that requires all species to be registered with the national recording centre, Studbook. After studying the recording and testing procedures, a modification to the progeny test system was recommended that identified sires that performed better across environments.  This ensured additional credibility for sire proofs and guarded against widespread use of under-performing sires.

Our staff were actively involved in genetic and production extension programs in the South African sheep and beef industries.  In addition, one of our staff members undertook a major genetic analysis of historical records from a large research flock.
